Why did my website traffic drop after redesign?

Usually URLs changed without redirects, titles were rewritten into slogans, or the new theme is slower. A 2026 Australian checklist before you panic-buy ads.

Traffic does not “hate the new brand.” Google lost the URLs, or people bounced because the new theme is slower than the old one.

The usual post-redesign autopsy

  1. URLs changed without 301s. /services/plumbing became /what-we-do. Google still sends people to the old path. It 404s. Rankings follow.
  2. Titles became slogans. “Emergency electrician Newcastle” became “Spark your journey.” You ranked for the first string.
  3. The blog or FAQs were left behind. Those pages were your long-tail.
  4. Analytics was not reconnected. You think traffic died; you just went blind.
  5. The new theme is heavy. Pretty, five-second mobile load. Bounce replaces ranking.

Do this before you spend on ads

  • Export the old URL list from Search Console and the last sitemap
  • Map every old URL to a new URL (or 410 it on purpose)
  • Reconnect GA4 and Search Console on day one
  • Compare queries, not just sessions
  • Test forms and tel: links on a phone on mobile data

A locked six-page website + AI chat build is 7–14 days after kickoff and assets. A real migration is longer because the URL map is the job. Do not launch on a Friday before a long weekend.

FAQs

Why did my website traffic drop after redesign?

The usual causes are missing 301 redirects, titles and URLs that Google already ranked being replaced with slogans, the blog 404ing, analytics not reconnected, or a slower theme. Fix the URL map before you buy more ads.

How fast should traffic recover?

If redirects and Search Console are clean, many sites stabilise over a few weeks. If the URL map was skipped, recovery waits until Google recrawls the new paths.

Should I revert the design?

Not until you know whether the drop is technical (404s, speed) or message (you deleted the words that ranked). Search Console queries before vs after will tell you.

How long should a redesign take so this does not happen?

A locked six-page Tech Aid site is 7–14 days after assets, including a URL map if you are replacing an existing site. A messy WordPress or Shopify migration takes longer because redirects have to be written, not hoped for.

Can Tech Aid repair a botched launch?

Yes — as monthly support ($350/mo) for redirects and titles, a scoped developer hire, or a website package if the new site is not salvageable. Extra approved work $150/hr.
